My Early Dog-Related Family History:
Both my mother as well as my father had had Bostons when they were young. Mom's dog from the 1940's was "Brandy", a large, nicely marked Boston (pictured is Mom left, Gram right, Brandy center). My Dad's dog from 1949 was "Duke", a small, undermarked dog that was extremely smart.
When I begged for a dog at age 9 after having numerous other "little" pets, Dad said it had to be a Boston. No problem, I already thought they were great. We looked and looked for a pet quality Boston, but weren't satisfied with what we were seeing. We wanted a dog that came from clean surroundings, bred by someone (preferably a family), who really cared about the dogs. We finally found a breeder who raised them purely as pets who had puppies for sale. Dad said it had to be a male ("they are cleaner, & they don't bleed all over"!) so we picked out a cute male puppy and named him "Rudy". I did all those things that every red-blooded American little girl does like dress him up in baby's pajamas, and wheel him around in my baby buggy. He was purely pet quality, but was the consumate family dog - we always called him our "superdog" as he could do anything. He was especially good at licking Dad's feet. He LOVED to swim up at the cottage on our island in Canada in the summer, and he would jump off the rocks into the very deep, dark water chasing every stick that floated by. He would stand on the dock & scream when we were in swimming with air mattresses & other floats. Throw a Frisbee into the water and look out! He would swim till he was so exhausted we'd have to go out and occasionally rescue him. He would bark at us when we dove off the dock. This went on all day every day, so it's no wonder he slept on my bed upside down on his back, snoring loudly never moving all night. He was something else, a wonderful first dog for an active little girl. Yes, when I knew I needed to go to dog shows in 1972, I must admit I tried to show him quite a few times. My dad could see that there was no stopping me from showing, but could see that this dog did not fit in with the other Bostons at the shows. He was coarse and lacked a certain amount of breed type. He says he felt sorry for me going in with all this confidence trying to show this pet quality dog. Since he could see how serious I was about showing Rudy, he decided we should try & find a good show quality Boston that we could really be proud of. Something I could really go out and win with.
By this time I was 13, so we set out visiting kennels in the Western NY area in search of a good quality dog. We visited one kennel that did not have anything available at the time, but gave us the name of an old time breeder in Clyde, NY who had some fantastic dogs. They were from the Command line. We made an appointment and went out for a visit. Again, Dad wanted a male. Elsie Tearney was the breeder, and if you look at old Boston Terrier breed books with pedigrees, you will see her breeding listed many times. She was a sweet, quiet woman who lived out in the middle of nowhere.As we sat waiting, Mrs. Tearney went to another room to bring out a dog. It was a female, and she was a little undermarked. We didn't say much. She brought out another, and again, it was beautiful but a little undermarked. These were not young puppies, but 11-12 month olds. Then she walked Chris out. Our mouths dropped. He just hit us like a ton of bricks! My dad said, "that's the one we want, he's got a full collar". Boy, I'm glad he turned out to have a whole lot more than perfect markings! When we inquired about price, we were taken aback - much higher than we could have ever imagined spending on a showdog. Dad said we'd think about it and we left. I did not pressure my parents on this as it was a lot of money and the cash surely wasn't coming from me. Happily, they decided to buy Chris for me. I will always be grateful for their insight as to how serious I was about Boston Terriers.
Showdog History:Attended first dog shows the US and Canada in 1972 with my dog Rudy. Am. Can. Ch. Commands Gay Specialty - "Chris" DOB 1/10/73. Chris was our foundation sire, and all of my current "Elite" line of dogs go back to him. He could be counted on to put handpainted markings as well as beautiful heads on his puppies. I was at a disadvantage during these years, as my mother wouldn't let me keep some of the lovely puppies he produced then (out of other people's bitches), therefore, I had very little to work with in trying to continue the line. He had some real beauties that "got away". He was truly a dominant sire, and you could always count on him to improve upon an inferior bitch. I got very spoiled in this respect, as I thought all good males could do this. Not so. Since then, I have found few if any that have consistent, strong siring capabilities. As they say, "they just don't make them like they used to". I do not see dogs that look like Chris anymore. Where did they go? See "Chris" here. Chris was a very sweet & sensitive dog who was very attached to me. In his daughter Lillian, I found Chris' personality as well as the same attachment he had formed to me. All breeders love all of their dogs, but only a few hold that very, very special place in their hearts. Both Chris & Lillian tie for that honor with me.
Wendy's BR Command's Specialty - "Bernadette" DOB 7/31/74. Bernadette resulted from Chris' first breeding to a nice female "Bridgett" owned by an old time breeder Mrs. Leo Pottle of Niagara Falls, NY. Bernadette was a very small bitch, and I only showed her a couple of times. She had many good qualities, but her bite was not correct, so I never thought I could finish her. See "Bernadette" here. (Check out her future relative Bacall who is a reincarnation of Bernadette in so many ways, except for the bite problem). When I was 14 yrs. old, I chose to breed her to Dorothy & Ed Mowry's top sire Ch. Command's Honeyboy "Pat" (brother to Ch. Grant's Royal Command II). Pat was 11 years old at the time. I wanted to bring back the old Command line that Bernadette's father Chris had come from. Happily, we got............ Ch. Brindle Hill's Gryphon - "Gryphon" DOB 12/2/75 was my first home bred champion. He was a real terror, one of those Bostons that wouldn't let you "catch" him. Everyone who met him always remembered and liked him. I guess he just had that special "animal magnetism". I remember when we were at Wesminster & the NY specialty in 1978, he got loose in the lobby of the Loews Summit Hotel, and had my mom "skinning her knees" trying to catch him as he flew up the large winding staircase! He went Reserve at the Garden as well as at the NY Specialty that year. After these 2 shows, I showed him on the Cherry Blossom Circuit in MD & VA, and he won each day, finishing that week. I specialed him for a year in which he was undefeated. A great moving little dog and full of spunk, he was the consumate show dog & a real blast to show! See "Gryphon" here. Ch. Brindle Hill's Special Sydney - "Sydney" DOB 5/12/77 resulted from breeding Chris to Maxine, a female who was owned by another breeder. Sydney was a great little bitch and she had the combination of the best qualities of both her parents. See "Sydney" here. (Sydney and my current bitch "Coda" are almost twins except for markings - amazing how that could be with so many generations & years spanning the two). It seemed the logical choice in terms of linebreeding to breed Sydney to Gryphon. We did, and we got............ Am. Can. Ch. Brindle Hill's Fitzgerald - "Gerald" DOB 11/1/78. Gerald was a nice dog who I gave to the person I co-owned his mom Sydney with. He had many BOB & group placements in his show career. The well known author/breeder/judge Vincent Perry gave him some nice specialty & group wins and thought he was really super. Years later, we had a throwback to Gerald, our "Dallas" (see below). They were similar in many ways. See "Gerald" here. Brindle Hill's Elite Command - "Lillian" DOB 11/14/80 resulted from breeding Chris to a daughter of Gryphon, a great grandfather to great grand-daughter breeding, linebred on the Command line. If you like pedigrees, this was an ideal one representing the part of the Command line I had begun to create as the foundation of my Brindle Hill Elite line. Lillian was a home-body through & through, much too smart and educated to put up with silly things such as dog shows! She was a great dog, my pet and best friend. I was in college when she was a baby, so I did not take the time to train her for shows, and although I did take her to a few shows, her lack of training showed - she was miserable (even after garnering a few points along the way!) BUT she was one of the soundest bitches you will ever see, with a beautiful head, perfect front & rear, and a sweet & loving personality. Plain & simple, I could not see dragging her to shows when it was much more necessary for her to sit in my lap. See "Lillian" here. She did however, fall in love with Ch. Staleys' El-Bo's Showman during the winter of '85. After a brief courtship they wed, and this union produced our.... Ch. Elite Command's Specialty Kid - "Harrison" DOB 2/16/86, one of my best Bostons to date. Harrison is a well-balanced, 14 lb. dog with all the parts in the right place. He was a Best of Breed & group placer from the classes. He is a bit hyperactive, but if you can get him to stand still, you can see his quality. His handler once said of him "he's not stupid, he's just an idiot"! That about sums it up - he really has a super brain, but is just in too much of a hurry to get things done! See "Harrison" here. Bo-K's Fashion Model "Maia" DOB 4/22/87 was purchased to bring in an additional line to work with since we chose not to breed our bitch "Lillian" again due to her age. Maia was strongly linebred on Ch. Balboa Handsome Model. We chose Ch. Lorraes Chris of Wagonho as the stud we would breed her to as he complimented Maia very well. From this breeding we got Elite's Just A Jolly Playgirl "Thea" DOB 1/14/89. In 1988, Harrison was bred to a nice bitch named Wattses Velvet Starshine II "Babs" and the resulting offspring were (drumroll...) Ch. Elite Command's Sultry Siren - "Bianca", Ch. Elite Command's Harris Tweed "Dallas" & Ch. Elite Command's Prototype "Mick" DOB 3/12/88. What a treat getting 3 champions in one litter - and good ones at that! Bianca was very obviously the "pick" and I fell in love with her from day one. She was one of those once in a lifetime bitches - substance, beauty, soundness & a love for the show ring all combined in one dog. See "Bianca" here. She finished very quickly, with her 2 handsome brothers Mick & Dallas finishing soon after. Can't forget that Dallas was a group winner from the classes just as his dad Harrison was! In 1990 we added Wattses Twilite Enchantment "Monique" DOB 11/3/89 to our breeding program. In 1992, we bred her to Ch. J And S Hot Flash in order to preserve the Command lines that Monique carried. She had 5 beautiful puppies, one of which grew up to be Aslandia's Hot Flash Dancer "Tootsie", Cody's mother (see Cody under 1995 below). Our dog Elite's Just A Hunky Halfback "Ron" DOB 3/15/89 resulted from breeding Babs (the mother of our "super-litter" Mick, Bianca & Dallas) to Ch. Simms Hihopes Shawn. Ron was a good sized, very sound and sweet tempered dog who was the sire of our............ Ch. Elite Good Taste And Decorum - "Theo" DOB 5/27/90. He was the result of breeding Ron to Thea. He has a beautiful face, rock hard level topline, sound, firm body and a wonderful sweet disposition like his dad Ron. See "Theo" here. He produced 4 nice pups with Bianca, a nice champion male named "Boyd" with Aggie (see below), and 4 nice pups with Coda. In 1991, I wanted to breed Bianca to a Boston who consistently produced the kind of Bostons I liked. I had seen many offspring of Ch. Alexander's Dear John that I had really admired, so I decided to breed Bianca to him. She had 5 beautiful puppies, and we kept 2 - "Coda" and "Roy"..... Elite's Just To Admire - "Coda" (a.k.a. "Football") DOB 3/21/91 was possibly THE cutest puppy I have ever had (well, at least equal with her own daughter LaVie). She is a beautiful small brindle bitch, short backed with good length of leg, great front & topline, with eyes just as the standard requires - large, round, and as dark as they get. Coda went BOS in her first show over specials as a puppy, and later picked up 7 more points. Not being fully marked, I think the judges overlooked her a good many times. She was one of those dogs I liked, but had to accept the fact that many judges did not recognize her many good qualities. At home, she is like a sweet little trinket that we love to look at as well as welcome into our bed at night! See "Coda" here. We bred her one time in 1994 to our Ch. Elite Good Taste And Decorum, and she had 4 beautiful puppies. LaVie was near perfect in almost every way except she only got to be 9 lbs!! Tammi was a beauty too and was almost a reincarnation of her grandma Bianca. Little Davy was kept as our special pet. Ch. Elite's Just To Impress "Roy" DOB 3/21/91 is Coda's brother. He's a sweet boy who always has to have a toy in his mouth! He had fun at the shows, and now lives the good life relaxing at home! Elite Effervescence - "Trixie", Elite Hollywood Glamour - "Bacall", & Elite Agatha Of The Orient - "Aggie" DOB 11/20/92 were from Bianca's litter #2 by our Ch. Elite Good Taste And Decorum "Theo".
"Trixie" (Little Miss Perfect) is one of the best dogs structurally that I have owned to date. She was bred once, to Ch. Eu-Bet I'm The Parson's Pride and had one female puppy, Elite's One For The Money. Trixie is my guardian angel, just as Chris and Lillian were before her. She is very, very special (don't get me started talking about Trixie!) YES, she HATED dog shows - she is WAY too smart & sensitive for all of that nonsense! See her here.
"Bacall" a.k.a. "Peanut" is so darn cute, we can't stand it! Now, lets just hope she will produce a puppy as nice as she is for us some day! (She did! See her daughter here)
"Aggie" is the mother of our Ch. Elite's Taste Of The Orient "Boyd". She also has 2 more nice kids from a later litter, Petra & Einar.Ch. Elite High Torque - "Torky" DOB 11/20/93 resulted from breeding Bianca to Stella Polaris Tarkus Of Dest. He went Winners Dog at the Boston Terrier Club Of America's National Specialty show in 1994 at 6 mo. of age. He finished with 4 majors, going WD/Best Puppy/Best in Sweeps at the Boston Terrier Club of Greater Cincinnati and Best of Breed over a top 5 special to finish at 7 months of age. Torky had a "whirlwind" career! See "Torky" here. Torky has a nice champion son named Ch. Top Shelf Absolut Sherman. Ch. Aslandia's Future Force "Freddie" DOB 8/18/94 is a bitch we co-own and she is Cody's half sister. The highlight of her career was going Best Of Winners at the Golden Gate Boston Terrier Club show in San Francisco, California, and finishing with 3 majors. (Freddie was bred to our Ch. "Spuddie" (see below) and she had a beautiful, hand painted male puppy born July 1997). In 1995, we added 2 new males to our breeding program. The first was Ch. Aslandia's The Fugitive "Cody". We had been the breeders of Cody's mom Aslandia's Hot Flash Dancer, and her owners bred her to Ch. Al-Mar's Armed And Dangerous. Cody was the happy result. We liked Cody so well, that he came back east from California to live with us. He is a Specialty & group winning dog. See for yourself how nice "Cody" is. The other male was Ch. Special Spudsie Baileys Boy. "Spuddie" - is a great little dog that is just the type I like. A well balanced dog who loves to show and never puts a foot down wrong. See "Spuddie" here. We bred Trixie's only offspring "Pixie" to Ch. J And S Hi-Flying Fiesty Poncho, an extremely sound dog who is a brother to Ch. J And S Hot Flash R.O.M. He combines the best of the oldest Command lines still in existence today, and is the last dog still producing from this great line. From this breeding we got "Neeva", Elite Command's Seventies Style, so named because she represents a return to the Command line of dogs from the 1970's, which is where my line originally came from. For 1998, we co-bred and own a male named "Dillon" Ch. Aslandia's Elite Sneak Thief who finished with 3 majors in a very short time as a puppy! He resulted from breeding Spuddie to Freddie. He is a lovely, well balanced sound and sweet dog who combines the best qualities of both of his parents (something that rarely happens in breeding Bostons!) See Dillon here. Elite Hollywood Burlesque "Tarin" resulted from doing a 1/2 brother sister breeding on our champion "Bianca" by breeding Torky to Bacall. Bacall had only 1 puppy, but she is a real doll (and a real wild kid just like her mom and her dad!) See Tarin here at 7 mo. old (1998). In the spring of 1999, we bred Petra (Elite Hollywood Biker Chick) to Ch. Anchor's And ML's Northern Light, 1999 Westminster Best Of Breed and Specialty winning dog. You also may have seen "Boomer" on the Animal Planet series "Breed All About It" in the episode that featured Boston Terriers. He is a great little dog!! Boomer and Petra produced our "Hollyn", and she is really lovely. See her here. We repeated the breeding that produced Hollyn in 2000, and got another great litter. Our best showgirl from this litter is "Lily" Ch. Elite's Little Miss Revlon, named for the beautiful 1950's doll with the large round eyes by the same name. She's a doll AND a winner all right, plus she "smiles" and "hugs" us just like a person does - she is very S-P-E-C-I-A-L. Her nickname is "Smiley Girl". She is a breeder's dream. See her here! Lily has a sister named Elite's Isle Of Capri who didn't like being "watched" by everyone at the shows, so she got to stay home and keep house while her sisters Lily and Cissy had to go out and work for a living! See this perfectly beautiful girl (and our best buddy) here. When we saw Ch. Pequoag's Storm Warning at the BTCA National show in 2000 and 2001, he stood out as being one of the few dogs who had that great "all Boston" attitude, balance, beauty and soundness. In October of 2001, we bred out "Tarin" to him, and got these 2 great ones - meet Ch. Elite Hollywood Nightlife "Bruno" and Ch. Elite's Trippin The Light Fantastic "Dorene". With 2 superb litters from the past by Boomer and Petra which produced Hollyn and our Westminster AOM winner Lily, we repeated the breeding once more and got another doll baby! Here is "Athena", the only puppy in this litter. She is named Ch. Elite Hollywood Hell's Angel. For Petra's last breeding we bred her to our dog Roscoe (Torky x Pixie) and got one puppy "Emily", Elite's Bronze Mink. "Harvey" is the son of Furry (Torky and Neeva's daughter) and Keezer, Ch. Buerke's Mr. Troy By J-Lo. We really liked Keezer who I saw in person at the National 2003 and I decided to breed Furry to him. Harvey was the result! 2004: For Hollyn's last breeding, we chose one of the breed's finest sires "The Coz" Ch. Flashpoints Cosmic Ray. Hollyn had two boys, and during the c-section, my husband Joe saw Brady being pulled out and said "that one's going to New York's Westminster weekend"! At 6 months in his first show, he went BOB over a special and got pulled in the group. At 8 months, he DID go to the two NY Specialties Westminster weekend, and went winners dog both days! Brady loves to show! Brady went on to sire enough champions to gain his R.O.M. designation. His full name is Ch. Elite's Win-Win Situation R.O.M. Here's the Brade Brady has a brother named "Connor". He's a solid, sound boy with the sweetest temperament. Check him out here. 2004: We bred 2 beautiful headed dogs together (Harvey and Capri) and got an (11 lb) clone of his parents - Elite's Stuart Little. See Stuart here. Stuart has given us some beautiful babies (see below). 2006: Lily finally had babies! We got 2 beautiful girls, Petunia and Kuppi. In 2007, we bred Emily, our last Petra daughter to Boomer and got "Nate", Elite And Anchor's Ahoy Mate. Lily's daughter Petunia is all grown up now and she had a lovely litter 10/10/07. We are starting out with Elite's Little Miss Tammy Doll, a pretty little girl full of lots of zit-zingo just like her dad and half sister Dorene! Tammy also has a sister Elite's Little Miss Ideal "Glory". In 2008 we bred Petunia again, this time to Elite's Stuart Little "Stuart" and got our beautiful and feminine little girl Elite's Fresh-Faced and Bright-Eyed "Freshie". Freshie is simply a delight to be around and she's super smart, always my constant companion and bed partner. In late 2010 Nate was bred to Marilyn and Norm Randall's bitch "Maddie" Anchor's & Tarbay's Madrigal Of Weywood and in 2011 we were able to have two lovely bitches from that breeding: Elite's Pleasant Surprise From Anchors "Beka" and Elite's Golden Opportunity from Anchors "Bindi". These two sisters are wonderful new additions to our breeding program since all of our other girls have entered their senior years now. Thank you to Marilyn, Norm and Debbie Randall for the girls! In April of 2012, both Beka and Bindi were both bred to our dog Brady and we got some beautiful puppies in June! It was so interesting to breed two full sisters to the same dog and raise the litters together (a total of 7 puppies) Bindi had a daughter named "Jane", now Ch. Elite's Noble Ties That Bind CGC RN BN and she is co-owned with Margaret and Thomas Noble. She is not only a conformation champion, but she also has her AKC CGC title, her Rally Novice title and her Beginner Novice obedience title. She surpassed all expectations when she passed all of her health tests including a CERf eye exam at the age of 9-1/2! We are so proud and have worked for many years to breed Bostons that pass their CERF at age 5 - so Jane really outdid herself! We kept a female from Beka's litter, and she is Elite's Living Doll "Vivian". It was very exciting when we had our first litter from frozen semen via a transcervical insemination! The sire is no longer living, but he is Ch. Pequoag's Storm Warning (a Canadian dog) and our little Ch. Elite's It's All Fun And Games Until... "Violet" was one of the puppies that resulted from the breeding. Violet is super smart (coming from the "accident-prone/curiosity killed the cat" line on her daddy's side, hence her name), she learned how to open her crate at 4 months of age! She wants to learn new things every day and she loves to meet people and kids of all ages. She has a friendly, "bullet-proof" personality which I love. She had fun at the shows and finished her championship quickly. We bred Bindi to a lovely dog in Italy via chilled semen (yes, shipping chilled internationally can be done if luck is on your side!) named Ch. Kennedy's Wild Dibs On Me, owned by Loris Seno. We got 3 beautiful puppies, and ALL are some of the best I have ever bred, and that's saying a lot! We kept "Hattie" and named her Elite's All Dolled up - because she is! She never puts a foot down wrong, is so balanced and fancy in every way, plus she is the smartest and most intuitive dog you could ever want. Her brother "Hugo" Elite's Heart Of Gold is as pefect a male as you would want too and I have breeding rights on him. He is also a 100% correctly moving dog like his mom! Thank you to Loris Seno of Italy for making what could have been a complicated breeding such an easy pleasure for us! Then we had a very special litter from Hattie and frozen semen from Boomer who has given us so many of our best dogs from the past. This was my dream breeding that I wasn't sure would be possible, so we were so thankful we had puppies from the breeding. "Randall" is one of the stars of this litter, he looks a lot like his dad and is just as sweet as Boomer was. He gets so excited when he sees me, even if I leave the room for just a few minutes. Such a darling boy! The easy going temperaments on every one of these puppies earned them all a place in our home permanently! And in 2021, little 13 lb "Cedric" Noble's Elite All Things Bright And Beautiful came to us as a puppy, resulting from years of a partnership with Margaret and Thomas Noble who got their foundation champion bitch Jane from us. Jane had a champion daughter named Georgia and Georgia is Cedric's mother. We are delighted to have him, he is just so exceptionally beautiful, smart and fun! He is the brother to the up and coming star Ch. Noble's Brave Epic Odyssey "Homer" who is also VERY special! He already has group placings including a group one at under 1 year of age! He also won Best Of Breed at the National Dog Show and was seen on NBC TV on Thanksgiving day. He also has another brother named Rudy owned by Barbara Piercy Snyder! We are so proud of all of these beautiful brothers and we are thankful the Nobles let Cedric come to live with us!
